Residents & homeowners: Pledge to go Lights Out

Song Sparrow

I’m choosing to make migration safer for birds.

I want to help prevent some of the ~1 billion fatalities that occur every year when birds collide with illuminated homes and buildings.

I pledge to do what I can to reduce light pollution, especially during peak bird migration.

Between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., in April and May in the spring, and in September and October in the fall, I’ll aim to:

⦿ Turn off interior lights when no one is in a room
⦿ Draw window coverings (blinds, shades, curtains) after dark
⦿ Turn off decorative outdoor lighting, or limit lighting to ground level
⦿ Use timers or motion sensors for essential outdoor lighting where possible
⦿ Add “down-shields” to outdoor lighting to point light toward the ground versus at the sky
⦿ Choose warmer-toned bulbs (less than 2700 Kelvin) for outdoor lighting
